“In
the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of
unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the
military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of
misplaced power exists and will persist. We must never let the weight
of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes.
We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable
citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and
military machinery of defence with our peaceful methods and goals, so
that security and liberty may prosper together.”
from: US President Dwight D. Eisenhower's Farewell Address, January 17th,1961
I can only hope that the democratically elected representatives in France and in the USA take their job of controlling and restraining their countries' executive as seriously as the British and won't allow their leaders to rush them into another needless and unwarranted military adventure without UN mandate.

Bombs and missiles
won't solve the current crisis but have all the potential to set the
whole Middle East aflame and worse. It's for the UN Security Council
to decide what course to take and no one else.
